EDA500 connecting directly to PC
Before I order the EDA500 Expansion Chassis 5-Bay I want to verify if I can connect the EDA500 directly to my PC with Windows 10.
Can anybody help me with this?
Is there any compatibity list with the EDA500?
Thank you!
The combination EDA500 and StarTech.com 2-port SATA 6 Gbit/s PCI Express eSATA (PEXESAT32) WORKS!!!
But if you connect the second EDA500 to the second port of the PCI, it does NOT work.
Good luck to you all.
Thanks for the responses!

It's designed to be connected to specific ReadyNAS models.
I've never heard of anyone whose used it with a Windows PC.

Thanks, So, I understand it is maybe possible. I think the EDA500 is like a dockingstation, it should be possible. Any feedback if I am wrong.

Certainly Netgear did not design it to be a general esata expansion, so I wouldn't go as far as saying it "should be possible"
I suspect the port on the PC would have to support the sata Port Multiplier functionality at the very least..
- CaesareaGuideSo, should I try and update you? Or should I stop trying to use the EDA500 like I want to use as a dockingstation?

Note that none of the folks posting on this thread work for Netgear (the Netgear folks who are active here haven't commented).
BTW, one of the EDA500 bays isn't electrically connected to the SATA bus - it is intended to hold a spare. So it's really a 5-bay unit with a storage slot.
- CaesareaGuideTotally, there are 6 bay which one has no SATA connection as you can see at one of the photos.
Then it is a 5-bay unit with a storage slot, isn't it?
I will try and post back/update...- StephenBGuru - Experienced User

FWIW, there is a brief hardware overview here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osAZODdTodo
- jak0lantashMentorWhat problem exactly?
RN102 does not support EDA500.
(If you have an issue not related to EDA500, please create another thread.)- EmachineAspirant
I have an EDA500 and when I buy an RN312 model, all is ok ?
I hope than I can acces my drives into the EDA 500
Thanks

If by "access your drives" you mean read data from them that's already on them, then no. The NAS will need to re-format them to a Linux format before you can use them, which will wipe out all data. If you mean "make use of the drives", then yes.
- jak0lantashMentorThe EDA500 has 5 bays. Well, iirc, it has 6, but only 5 have a connector in the back.
A DAS could also provide interesting features such as RAID (directly on the chassis). And it works out of the box.
My point is that maybe an EDA500 for $125 is a good deal but not as no-brainer as it may seem.- StephenBGuru - Experienced User

But I don't see much risk for someone who wants to try it - even if they can't return it, they could likely get the purchase price back by reselling the disk trays on ebay.

- CaesareaGuideI'm still waiting for the Startech® 2 Port PCI-Express eSATA Controller Adapter Card (PEXESATA2).
I also ordered the StarTech.com 2-poort SATA 6 Gbit/s PCI Express eSATA (PEXESAT32).
I will test both and share it with you all. Finger crossed!- CaesareaGuide

Did you put in drives that already had data on them and find you could access that, or just empty ones?
