Demo of OS6
Hi Jabba,
Is there a demo or user guide for OS 6. I am looking at buying a 516 but am nervous as there is little info (other than a few you tube videos) on what features are built into the new OS.
As en example I have read reports that
1) that you can no longer add your on add-ons, it is not clear what you do if you want to install a beta version of an add-on or write your own.
2) Dropbox syncing has changed as does no longer work as is does on the current Pro 6. Does the new ReadyDrop replace the old dropbox support and will it work with DropBox teams?
3) Can we still SSH into it as root
I would prefer to do the due-diligence up front, either by reading guides or working through an online demo (like QNAP and Synology do), rather than ordering the 516, using it for a week and then returning it after evaluation.
Do you have some documentation you can send?

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retired1) You can sign up at developer.netgear.com to become a developer for the Genie Marketplace. If you were provided with a beta version of an add-on you should be provided with instructions on how to install it.
2) Dropbox syncing in the new products would be to backup a share on your NAS to a folder in your Dropbox account. This is one way syncing. ReadyDROP enables you to bi-directionally sync files directly between your NAS and your PC/Mac.
3) Yes. There is an option in the Dashboard to enable SSH access. Like before you should see a warning about the implications for support.
There is a Software Manual here: http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/READYNAS-100/ReadyNAS%20OS6%20SW%20UM_13Mar2013.pdf
Though the 516 is not mentioned, most of the information in that manual would be relevant. - emellodewAspirantThanks for the guide, it was extremely useful.
Just a few final questions :)
1) Can the RAM in the 516 be upgraded, and if so what is the maximum?
2) What is the operating noise of the 516
3) On the hardware compatibility list the drives for the 516 are a fraction of the drives for the Pro 6. Is this because the Pro 6 drives have not been tested yet? In the last 6 months I replaced all drives with Western Digital WD RED WD20EFR ones. I noticed on the comparability list that these drives have been replaced by WD RE4-GP WD2002FYPS which are twice the price. Does that mean that I have to junk the new drives. and re-purchase WD RE4-GP WD2002FYPS ones?
@Jabba - please could you clarify on the compatibility list which drives on the Pro 6 have failed testing for the 516, which are currently undergoing testing, and which drives you are planning to test in the future. My guess is this information will help a lot of people/businesses looking to purchase or upgrade. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThere is a datasheet here which gives the noise level at < 28 dba. It also specifies "extra ram slot" which I'd say implies that the memory is expandable - my guess would be to 8 GB.
It doesn't specify whether the noise is spec'd diskless (or what disks were used). Note the new products support SSD. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIf the stock 4GB module is replaceable you could probably put 16GB (2x8GB) RAM in the RN516.
- etonLuminaryStill no live demo of OS6?
- super_poussinVirtuosoyou can try the VM : http://apps.readynas.com/pages/?page_id=143
- etonLuminaryThanks. At least something. Strange that both Synology and Qnap are able to host live demos on the web of their systems, but not Netgear.
- super_poussinVirtuosoThey could do the same
- chirpaLuminaryWhen I was there, I kept live demos of each platform. They tore down that lab after I left. It was easy to maintain, was on a dedicated separate DSL line. And since v5.3.5 firmware (should work in v6.x also, as both are using Dashboard (versus old FrontView)), I had r2d2 add a DEMO mode flag, so when the system had that flag active, you couldn't save settings; so people could mess with the GUI but not do anything harmful (factory default, shutdown, etc).
Demo mode is added. (5.3.5-T33+)
If file ‘/.demo_mode’ is exist, all nml operation which affect to machine state will be returned as success.
Also, since then, people have found out how to run FrontView/Dashboard in a VM, so they could host a few VMs with non-persisent disks very cheaply. - etonLuminary

Found a link to an old Frontview live demo: http://www.readynas.com/simulators/frontview/home.htm
