Disks don't fit back in

I received a reallocated sector count error with a huge jump (increase of 600+ sectors) last week, and after restarting the unit got stuck at checking the FS (69%). I had a spare disk and thought replacing the bad one might get me started again. I removed the disk and replaced it with the spare but had trouble pressing it all the way into the slot. I removed the other three disks to make sure everything was aligned properly and now none of them can be inserted all the way in - and the door won't close. I have examined the case carefully and it looks almost like the distance between the top and bottom plates has somehow decreased?? Everything looks tightly connected and the case is not in the least bit loose, but I just can't press the disks in far enough to engage the connectors.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

  • I suspect that you're pushing the tray latch closed too soon. I usually push the tray in by pushing under the latch or by the bottom where the button is until it stops and then firmly push the latch to seat it.
  • Thanks so much for the quick response - it had been several years since I opened this up.
