Factory Reset and some questions
Continuation from other thread about my bad disk(s)... Now that I have factory reset it, it's a bit depressing to realize I lost all kinds of customizations I had made to ReadyNASOS over the cour...

So educate me, what does that mean that a release file is missing? How does that impact us?
I guess for sure there is no chance of getting netgear build essentials or lib6c-dev
anyway my Readynas yesterday suddenly decided to resync itself for no apparent reason and no reported errors. Not sure what to make of that. Maybe it’s time to shelf this thing once and for all.

"Release" is a file that contains various hashes that confirm that the files in the repo are intact. Those include MD5, SHA1, SHA256, and SHA512. For 6.10.9, the file starts like this:
Date: Thu, 14 Dec 2023 18:03:14 +0000
Suite: 6.10.9
MD5Sum:

But the problem isn't just that Release is missing. Everything in the repo is either missing or has permissions set to prevent downloads.
While I do have a mirror of the 6.10.x repos, I didn't realise that dev existed until I looked into your question on build-essentials. So I never included that in my mirror.
Anyway, I have requested that Netgear put the repo back (or maybe put it into github), but I'd be (pleasantly) surprised if anything comes of that.

Thanks for putting in that request. It baffles me a bit that Netgear has gone to such lengths to completely deprecate this machine this way. But anyway, yea, if they would at least put it up on GitHub without promising any support. I think some people will keep using these in whatever capacity they can for years to come and they ought to be able to.
Stefan (RNXtras) has some repos of some kind he has left up, do any of these looks like relevant mirrors?

Maybe I would need to roll back to 6.10.8?

All of the apt.readynas.com repos have this problem, so rolling back will not help.

They look like his packages, I don't think he is redistributing any Netgear libraries.

Hey Stephen is there any chance I can try your mirror to 6.10.9 repos to see if apt will install build-essential?
I have my readynas back up mostly, but the one thing that would really get it back to where it was before would be to also have Medusa running, which requires newer Python3, which requires build-essential to build it myself. I had all this working fine before, but now since the Netgear repo is down...I can't install build-essential, I guess it depends on something like libc6-dev from netgear, or something; and that majorly cripples what can be done rolling forward for anyone starting from a factory reset.
sudo apt-get install build-essentialReading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: build-essential : Depends: libc6-dev but it is not going to be installed or libc-dev Depends: g++ (>= 4:4.9.1) but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.- StephenBAug 06, 2025Guru - Experienced User

Not sure how best to do that, since my NAS is not open to the internet. The repo mirror for 6.10.9 is about 6 GB, but the overall mirror (which includes the Debian Jessie Archives) is about 320GB.
- Dewdman42Aug 06, 2025Virtuoso
if you're willing to zip up the 6gb with instructions for how I can unzip it here and use it locally. I can find a place for you to transfer it, .it would be worth it to try, I don't think I need the Debian jessie archive...I should have that from SandShark's instructions for how to use it now...and it has been working fine.
It's just build-essential which appears to depend on some stuff from Netgear, that I really need. Not being able to install build-essentially really just cuts these machines off at the knees.
