Few questions with WD20EARS-00MVWB0

So I just got a diskless Readynas Ultra 2 enclosure and 2x WD20EARS-00MVWB0 (2TB each)
This seems to be a pretty common setup
So setup went fine, i let raidar install the partition automatically and the second disk "resync" in about 6 hrs (smart LCC: 9)
then i updated Frontview to 4.2.17 (was 4.2.14 from retail) at this point i check the smart stats again and everything seems meh(LCC: over 200)
Now i created a share and copied my entire ~89GB of music. (LCC is now over 1700)
this is when i start getting worried

So i checked the forums a saw a few tips but they're either ambiguous or older posts so im looking for someone with experience to just give some straight answers on how to correctly setup

a few questions:
1. I heard these drives use something called idle3. should i change it with the bootdisk below? will this fix the high LCC count increase? which command should i use /d or /s300 and why?
2. disk_usage.log says there is a 4.0GB partition labeled "/dev/md0"(im assuming this is system reserved). Is this a normal size for it?
3. i believe these drives are 4kb sectors (but im not sure how to check). but the partition.log says "Logical sector size: 512 bytes". i realize the physical sector is different but i wanna know if this is correct?

I can upload additional logs if necessary

Got WDidle3 on bootdisk here:

I consider myself somewhat of a computer expert, but this is my first NAS or Raid configuration so please bear with me

  • While I dont' have any experience with the WD drives other members have reported various results and have altered the idle settings. My reason for posting is to advise you to make sure until you get the drive settings altered to make sure you keep a good backup of all your data. (Always a good idea even when everything is operating normally).
  • I know you've already bought the disks, but I feel obliged to state that I would advise against using WD20EARS-00MVWB0 disks, even after fixing the LCC issue with WDIDLE3. I learned it the hard way why these disks are not on the compatibility list.

I had four of these start showing serious signs of failure (freezing, I/O errors) virtually simultaneously - within hours of each other - after seemingly working OK for 9 months. Fortunately, I was able to replace the drives in time, albeit just barely (started getting I/O errors and extreme slowdowns rebuilding the degraded array). What's worse, the SMART data of any of the disks did not indicate any problems, so had I not happened to take a look at the logs, the only warning sign would have been the intermittent sluggishness of the ReadyNAS.

As an aside, after what I've experienced, I would like the developers to consider monitoring I/O errors and any errors related to the md and ata subsystems in addition to the SMART data. These might complement the existing disk status monitoring of the ReadyNAS product line nicely.
