Getting New NAS question

I currently has a ReadyNAS 524X with 4 8TB drives, one serving as a parity check drive.   I am looking into an 8 bay ReadyNAS RN626X/RX628X.   I have three questions about the process and I hope someone can educate me a litte.

1) can you mix HDD sizes, say 4 8TB HDDs with 4 4TB HDDs and still keep the parity check feature;

2) can drives just be moved from the current 4 Bay NAS to a newer 8 bayNAS without having to reinstall everything, i.e., just move the drives and keep the data as is and

3) I have a space issue so can the new RN626X/RX628X NAS be laid on its side permanently with no concerns of drive crashing or damage.

    The volume is expandable, in general you can't add in smaller drives to the existing array.

    You could switch to FlexRAID, and create as second 4x4 TB RAID-5 volume.  That would have have the space of your current volume (12 TB or ~10.9 TiB).  Yhen you can shift some of your shares to the second volume.

    Yes.

    Not something I've ever needed to do.  It should be ok, as long as you don't block the airflow.

  • Actually, the parity is spread over all the drives, it's not just on one.  It takes the same space as the largest of your drives, so you can calculate storage space by thinking of it that way, but it's not how things really are.

    By "looking into an 8 bay ReadyNAS RN626X/RX628X", I assume you mean looking into buying a used unit.  New ReadyNAS have not been available for quite a while now.  Frankly, IMHO, with Netgear clearly abandoning the NAS market, this would be a better time to look into migrating to another brand if you need to upgrade to a larger NAS.
