Hitachi 7K3000 HDS723020BLA642 - NV+ & Ultra 6 Issues
I'm trying to replace 2 hard drives on 2 different boxes. One is an NV+ which has 3 1TB drives the other is an Ultra 6 which has 3 other 2 TB drives.
I'm replacing some drives that are getting errors with 2 Hitachi 7K3000 HDS723020BLA642 drives. These are 2 TB drives.
After replacing the drives I'm getting a drives are "dead" in Frontview on both boxes. These drives are on the compatibility list so I'm really stumped. It seems to me the odds of both drives being bad are slim. I did notice a note on the compatibility list about these drives. It was "P/N:0F12115". I'm not sure what that means.
Does anyone have any ideas as to how I should troubleshoot this issue?

- PapaBear1ApprenticeHitachi had the model number on the drive label, but the P/N was used on the outer anti-static bag but the model number was not. So that led to confusion as some sites listed the drive by the P/N and some sites listed them by the model number.
I would first make sure my backup was current and complete. One of the most critical times for the NAS is on the resync, for if another drive is weak and fails at this point, you then have the dreaded double drive failure which very often results in data loss. Then hot pull the drive in question, attach it to a Windows PC and use drive management to remove all partitions from the drive. Then hot re-insert the drive. P/N is fine BUT I just noticed these are okay for my NV+ but not on the HCL for the Ultra 6.

I did this. I Frontview/Health tells me the disk is "dead". The log says, "Data volume will be rebuilt with disk 2."
The display on the Ultra 6 under the IP address says, "C: Unprotected".
Not sure what that means. Is there something I missed?
Note: When I inserted the disk the Ultra said, "Testing Disk", "C Unprotected" and finally "Disk Passed" then back to the "C: Unprotected" which seems to be permanent. - PapaBear1ApprenticeFor some reason, it seems to accept the disk, but will not resync which is why you are getting the C: Unprotected message.

I've looked at a few other threads and it seems my best option is to do a factory reset and see if the new drive works. Then restore my backed up data.
That is unless you can give me another option. :)
Actually that seems to be my easiest option. Somehow the Ultra is confused.
Let me ask....what is the benefit (or necessity) of doing a hot swap vs a cold swap of new drives? - PapaBear1ApprenticeWhen replacing a drive, it is normally better to do a hot swap. During the swap, the unit is supposed to recognize, initiallize and resync the new drive. However, years ago when I was a newby, with my NV+, I lost a drive within a month. I shut it down, removed the old drive, inserted the new one, and rebooted and all went well (both of those drives then ran for the next 3 years, over 25,000 hours before being replace for larger ones).
I would do one thing a little different. I agree that your best and most efficient step is a factory default, but I would actually do two. The first one would be with only the suspect drive in place. With a solo drive there is no hours long synchronization to take place, so if the drive is in fact good and is accepted, it should only take about 15 minutes or so to initialize and establish a one drive volume. Once the volume has been established, then you know the drive is OK. Then shut it down, insert the other two and do a factory default on reboot.

I've had ReadyNAS' for some time and I'm really satisfied with the equipment. I have 2 NV+s that were past warranty and Netgear replaced power supplies at no charge. Great customer service. It's just when a problem arises I'm am out of the loop since I don't read this forum until then. :roll:

What are the odds of getting 2 bad disks out of the 3 I ordered?

I just feel (no data, just a hunch) that the ReadyNAS units are a tad bit more sensitive. I have no problem with that but it's very frustrating. I've had to replace disks on my ReadyNAS units in the past but in the last two years or so it seems that the QC of the drives has declined. I requested a refund from Newegg on the 2 bad disks. When the dust settles I believe I'll give the WD Reds a try. Right now everyone seems to be out of stock.
