While this is conjecture on my part, I believe it was done not to remove functionality, but the fact that so many of the "smart" functions of today's printers interfere with the print server. The older "dumb" printers that acted simply as a printer without sending any information back to the PC seemed to work great. The multi-function printers do not seem to work except as printers, no scanning funtion seemed to work. Then couple in the fact that network capable printers are now so common even on the low end printers, it no longer seems worth the hassle of trying to provide the function only to have an issue when other printers worked, but the one particular one the customer had did not.
I would not be surprised to see the print server disappear from the x86 line when their version of RAIDiator is updated.
FWIW - Newegg has a Samsung Wireless (no ethernet) Monochrome Laser printer for $62 delivered. They have a similar Brother with wireless and ethernet for $90.
