Installing new larger drives RN 202, RAID 1

Good day folks, I did some searching but didn't find what I wanted. Or maybe I didn't get lucky. Alomng with that frankly I wasn't sure if this was the best choice of sub forum. So please if I picked the wrong one then I;d appreciate it being moved appropriately or advise me and I'll start it in the correct area.

We have a RN 202 in service runing 2TB drives in Raid 1. I beleive but can't confirm just yet the OS is 6.x.x. or firmware until I get on site. We are reaching capacitiy. Now under normal circimstances if this was a pc I would just clone the drive(single) to a new larger drive and be on my mary way. But this is a little different animal to me. FYI I am a computer tech, been in the business 16 years, but These NAS boxes are a bit of a new beast to me.

I typically clone using conezilla, or Paragon. But alas I'm not so sure this is the way to go so what I'm looking for is instruction on the PORPER way to install 2 new 4TB drives in this unit and retain in whatever manner the data I have now. I'm a bit concerned over how long this process may take as I am aware that rebuilds of a raid can take many  hours. Unfortunetly this business runs monday through Friday so I'm hoping that this task could be completed by starting on Friday night and being ready to put it back on line the following Monday.

BTW I have another issue that I will conqur first and that is the forgotten and or won't accept the password issue. I see the instrctions on re installing the OS and hope that does the trick.

Thank you to all in advance.

  • The process is to first hot-insert one new drive, and wait for the resync to complete.  Then hot-insert the second drive.  After the second resync, the volume will expand.

The other approach is to back up the data, power down, and install both new drives.  Then reconfigure the NAS, and restore data from backup.  This avoids the extra resyns, and If something were to go wrong, you still have the original drives.

Ok I'll buy that and that makes the time issue a non issue.

Confirm that we simply open that baby up, yank the drive, insert new drive, walk away.

That is the process (one at a time).

Of course the array is not redundant during a resync, so it is a good idea to have a current backup.

  • Good day folks, Ok so I did not have to do a reset for the password as I had forgoten about the fact that user names are CASE sensitive-uggg

I got in and a F/W update was ready to load so I allowed that before putting in a new drive. Aftyer that completed a second F/W update was ready so I installed that.

this brings the unit up to 6.4.2

I pulled the #2 drive and inserted the new 4TB drive, verified it was resyncing and left it be, I didn't get a chance to check it for 7 hours but at that time the sync had completed.

So in the next day or so I;ll get the second larger 4 TB installed.

A new twist and this will be for a new thread, turns out the bulk of the space used was from daily Snapshots!!! But it appears that since the unit has now updated the snapshots did not update properly and I can not delete them without assistance from someone here as it will require SSH access etc. I can not do the backup wipe and restore routine. There is just no time in this office for them to be down that long.
