legacy ReadyNAS Ultra 2 Plus w/ new disks
Would you be comfortable running an upgraded 12 year old ReadyNAS Ultra 2 Plus if you put in brand new disks? I am considering returning to this old reliable after running out of patience with it...

Yes, but with some caveats: Upgrade RAM to 2GB, convert to OS6, don't plan to use any apps, and make sure you are using RAID.
It's true that Netgear appears to be going out of the NAS business, and I would not suggest using a RedayNAS for business use because of the outdated Linux core of its OS. But I believe it will be safe for the average user for some time to come. If you were purchasing the NAS, I might suggest differently, but putting one you already own back into service is still a viable solution, IMHO.
