Maxtor One Touch disappearing
Hi There, need some advice on a problem I'm facing with my USB Maxtor One Touch. Its is not USB powered and uses it own power adapter.
I have a Maxtor One Touch (MOT) which is hooked up to the rear USB Port of my ReadyNAS Ultra 6 Pro. When left idle for a long time, the MOT goes to sleep and spins down. This is not a problem as whenever my schedule back up occurs, the MOT spins up and the backup job completes successfully and then goes back to sleep.
The issues comes into play ever since I enabled the scheduled power on/off on the ReadyNAS. It seems that when the ReadyNAS powers on with the MOT attached, it fails to detect it and the ReadyNAS displays a 0 capability disk which is inaccessible. Only way to resolve this is to pull the power and USB from the drive, plug in the power first, wait for the disk to spin up and then plug in the USB cable. Interestingly, just pulling the USB cable doesn't always recover this situation.
Any advise on what to do?

- PapaBear1ApprenticeIt sounds as if when the MOT is asleep the NAS can not detect it, which I can understand. Since it cannot detect it, it is not there to the system.
As an alternative, rather than powering down the NAS, consider using disk spin down. Some don't care for it, but I have one (NVX Pioneer) that is my backup unit. After the backups are finished, it spins down.
The only other alternative would be to disable the sleep mode on the MOT. - sdchewAspirantHmm. Problem with the spin down option is I can't set the lull period. Moreover, I do have various addons which have background tasks so they might end up randomly spinning up the disk
