Migrating data from existing NAS

I am considering an Ultra 4 or 6 Plus to replace my aging Buffalo Terastation, 4TB RAID5, which is currently at about ~99% full. Is it possible to migrate data from the Terastation to the ReadyNAS WITHOUT moving the disks? Also, I plan to use the Terastation as backup target (RAID 0). Is rysnc server on Terastation my only option to get this to work?

  • You can use any supported network protocol to copy data from the terastation to a ReadyNAS. Not sure what protocols are supported on the TS, but ReadyNAS supports CIFS/SMB, NFS, rsync, FTP and AFP so copying the data over shouldn't be an issue. I generally recommend NFS for new massive data sets (rsync is good for incremental/secondary backups, but will be painfully slow moving ~4 TB worth of data).

Moving disks from TS to ReadyNAS won't work, as the 2 systems are different under the hood. The ReadyNAS will initialize any disks that are installed into it and prepare for use with the NAS (format, partition, install OS, etc.) and will destroy any existing data.
