Migration from older to new ReadyNAS
My long used (>10 years) ReadyNAS NV+ just ended its live, the power supply (I guess) did give up today. So it is time to look out for a new home fo rmy data.
Since a ReadyNAS served me well I saw the ReadyNAS 314 as a replacement device. My question is this: Is there any chance that hard disks of my old NV+ will continue to hold its data when being placed into the new one?
Since I think this is a very remote chance is there any way to extract the data from the old hard disks?
Thanks in advance.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredDarquebus were you also using X-RAID?
- DarquebusAspirantHi All!
Yes, both RND4000 uses X-RAID, with 4 pcs WD 2.0TB Green HDDs, similar HDDs.
The good unit has RAIDiator v4.1.9.
My defected unit has RAIDiator 4.1.10 or 11, I don't remember exactly, but it has one or two steps newer version.
I just turned ON the unit without disks, of course does not start, it wants disk.
That says to me, the "OS" loads from the disks, not stored in unit's internal memory/eprom/storage, if this kind exists.
Therefore I really hope I can simply put my HDDs, load up the RAIDiator v4.1.1x, and I can backup all of my datas. :) - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserWhat should happen is that 4.1.9 will be installed on the disks when you turn on the good unit, and then it will complete the boot up.

i dont know.
i just really hope the HDD and DISK setups, the RAID configuration are totally independent from the firmware installation.
Im just waiting for confirmation of Yoda Master :) (mdgm) - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThe configuration (RAID, users, shares, network, etc) is on the disks, and it will migrate with them. The downgrade to OS 4.1.9 will not change the configuration.
- DarquebusAspirantThank you for answers.
I just put the 4 disks into the RND4000 and starts flawless.
Seems to me all data is stored on disks, nothing in the unit.
The RAIDiator version was v4.1.12 on my disks.
All data saved. :) Started to backup to another NAS with mirror. :) - NhellieVirtuoso

Basically the information saved on the flash are just OS and I believe bios info. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
Yes. But if the flash OS doesn't match what's on the drives, the OS firmware will be upgraded (or downgraded) to match the flash.Nhellie wrote: Darquebus wrote:

But old/defected unit and my disk set (and the unit) had v4.1.12 firmware.
I just simply put the 4 disks without any preparation or action, simply boot up from my disks and after FileSystem checking it was fully accessible with my old permissions and shares.
Of course I will check the situation after the backup process.
I will put an empty disk alone into unit and check the firmware.
Another interesting fact... the borrow unit has only 256MB memory module... reads only 10-11MB/sec... my old unit had 1GB RAM module, there was 18MB/sec read...
Of course HDDs are smart error free, RAID is perfect... so I dont know why does this diff.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredI would suggest installing a firmware update to make sure the firmware on the disks is the same as the firmware on the flash.
