the default x-raid mode is a single volume that automatically expands when you add disks
to do what you suggest you would have to configure the device for flex-raid mode and manually setup the volumes as you prefer.
Note however, flex-raid mode on the nv+ is not expandable, and the older sparc device is limited to 2tb drives max, while the newer ARM based can support 3tb+ drives.
