My NVX died last night. Can i read disks with another NAS?
Hello, my NVX died last night, but i think disks should be fine. I was trying to install disks into new RND 10400 unit, but it does not see my drives. I found that it's not compatible with hard drives from older NAS as NVX. I have data on four hard drives, so ReadyNas Duo will not help me =(
I need to recover my data anyway, and i found few used Netgear NAS at local classifieds. Does anyone know if it's possible to read data from my hard drives on ReadyNas Ultra 4 or Readynas NV+ ??? Maybe any other NAS are compatible with my disks?

Hello Rain13,
Welcome to the community!
This may be difficult, honestly. ReadyNAS NVX is an x86 OS 4.2 NAS while ReadyNAS NV+v1 and Duov1 are both OS4.1 so you cannot definitely use the disks from the NVX on any of the OS4.1 chassis (or vice versa) expecting that data will be intact, same with OS6.
Your option here is either you get the same exact model of chassis where these disks have been working or get a data recovery service. Also, make sure you label the disks, inserting them to the same model of chassis should be in the same exact order.
Please read this article as it may help you and answers some questions you have.

I cannot believe that a moderator is giving out such bad advice.
Any OS 4.2.x unit can read the drives from an NVX. With 4 drives, it must be a 4 or 6 drive unit, of course. While the NVX is a 32-bit machine and the rest of the x86 versions are 64 bit, OS 4.2.x is the same for all. So, any of the Pro or Ultra models will work fine except the Pro/Ultra2. I migrated the disks from two NVX's into an Ultra4 and a Pro 6 with absolutely no changes needed.
Instructions have also been posted before for using an OS6 x86 machine to recover data from a Pro. I don't know why the drives from an NVX would be any different. It's not as plug-and-play as with an OS4.2.x NAS, though.
It can be important to have the chassis and the drives have the same version of the OS installed, so I hope you remember which is on the drives. You can put any old spare drive in the chassis to install a different OS version in it if needed before inserting the drives from the NVX,
If the problem is the power supply (which is a likely candidate), there are other options. The supply can be replaced with a micro-itx, aka flex atx, power supply, but reconfiguring the connector pins is required. See a previous post from me regarding this. To just recover the files, any ATX supply can be installed externally, with the same connector pin change. An extender cable can make the job easier if it's just for a temporary file recovery, but there isn't room for the extra cable internally.

If you get a new OS6 business NAS, Netgear can help with migration. You'd need enough storage to off-load the data, but the new NAS can be set up to read the data.
You could mount the disks in a linux system too - assuming you have enough SATA interfaces.

I have an NV+ v1 that died. The 4 drives were set up as X-raid. If I connect 4 USB to SATA drive controllers and connect all drives and boot with Linux would I be able to see everything to copy it off?
