Need to replace toasted 12V 5A supply for ReadyNAS V2

Hello community,

The plug that inserts into my ReadyNAS V2 started to melt and burn. Fortunately, I caught it before it damaged my office. As a bonus, the drives are still intact (I tested with a supply from a V1). Can anyone recommend a reliable replacement, or a source for an original NETGEAR part?

Thanks,

Nick

  • When you use the V1 supply with the V2, check the connector and see if it's getting warm.  If it is, then you may still have a poor connection.  If it isn't, then the issue likely was in the connector on the other supply.  That replacement ReadyNAS supply does sound like a good option.  While you may be able to simply replace the connector on the old supply, I wouldn't risk it with the low cost of a new supply.

It is a much better option to remove the connector entirely and replace it with a "pigtail" wire with a connector.  Just make sure you also use a grommet or other method to insure the metal case doesn't cut through it.  Doing it that way makes it more difficult for pressure on the connector to damage it.  Besides, you are unlikely to find the proper part in small quantity.

Thanks for the suggestion, Sandshark, but that's a bit outside my confort/knowledge zone unless you can direct me to a reference that describes the process.

There are a number of 12V/5A adaptors out there; I was just looking for someone who had experience with a reliable one.

I've never needed to replace one of the NAS adapters, so I don't have any first-hand experience.

The cost is fairly low ($15-25 USD), so a risk-buy is reasonable.

Is the power socket on the v2 damaged?  Or is it just the connector on the power brick?

The damage appears to be limited to the connector on the power brick, where damage can be seen on both the external and internal plastic parts. There's a small amount of smoke residual on the outside of the NAS at the power socket, but I was able to power it using a similar power supply from a V1 so I could make a backup.
