Firmware that comes on the NAS would vary depending on when the unit was manufactured.
Put one 3TB disk in the NAS. If running firmware older than 4.2.16 it will likely be recognised as having <1TB capacity. Don't worry about this. Update the firmware via System > Update > Remote in Frontview, verify the update completed successfully then power down, put all disks in and do a factory default via the boot menu: http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_use_the_boot_menu
This will give you a clean setup on the latest firmware.
