New hard drive is "dead"

I have a Readynas Duo and just bought a a 1 TB Seagate replacement hard drive for one that recently failed (it's on the HCL). I placed the new Seagate drive in the first bay and expected it to take some time to duplicate the data on the second hard drive (I am using x-raid). I didn't turn the Readynas off or reboot first. I just put it in and went to bed. This morning, it says it's "dead". I know this is possible, but it seems very unlikely. Did I make a mistake when I installed it? How do I verify that it's really dead?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Was the failed disk in the first bay? How long did you wait after removing the failed disk before inserting the replacement?

Yes, the failed disk was in the first bay. There was a span of 4 or 5 days between removing the failed disk and inserting the replacement.

Have you tried removing the replacement disk then reinserting it?
