Are you using FlexRAID or XRAID?
Do you see a format button on the volume page when you select the new drive? If the drive is already formatted, you need to format it in the NAS before the expansion will start.
Also, have you downloaded the log zip file? That could also give a few clues.
FWIW, I have seen a couple of other posters recently who had a bit of trouble getting expansion to start. They ended up doing a factory default with all disks in place - which succeeded. Then of course they had to reconfigure the NAS and restore all the files from backup.

I noticed that the drives were extremely hot so I tested them again. As it turns out, the drives are bad. All 3 of them. And when I contacted the seller to say they had failed diagnostics, he did not even question it and immediatly refunded my money. I figured the price was too good to be true.

The WD4000FYYZ does run quite hot, so that may or may not have been related to the failures. A word of caution about using a USB dock is that most have no cooling except ambient air and the one I know that does, by Sabrent, has given me false failures with larger drives. Before I had a computer with available removable caddy space for drive testing, I always had a little USB fan directed on drives under test.
But given your circumstance, it does seem likely that the seller had reason to suspect the drives. I recently bought two that were advertised as "tested and in great condition" and one failed SMART right from the beginning and the other had a lot of re-allocated and pending sectors. That seller actually wanted them back, but did provide a prepaid return. Some sellers just either lie or really have no business selling items about which they have no clue. And they count on the buyer also having no clue how to proerly test a drive. My guess is somebody else bought the drives I returned.

I only use the dock for testing purposes. Other drives have had no issue in this dock by iDsonix. And the seller doesn't even want the drives back. I think he knew they were no good.
