NV+ = Segate ES.2 vs. Constellation
Howdy folks, I have an NV+ (see signature below) that currently has three drives in it: Seagate Barracuda ES.2 / ST31000340NS I'm ready to expand and add a fourth drive, however the ES.2 drives have been discontinued.
It appears the replacement is the Seagate Constellation ES ST31000524NS. Since this is a newer drive it is NOT on the compatibility list for the NV+ however it is on the list for newer versions of the ReadyNAS.
They are both 1 TB, 32 MB cache, 7200 RPM, SATA 3.0 with 4.16ms average latency. On paper they look pretty identical.
Any thoughts? Will this drive work fine in my NV+ alongside the Barracuda ES.2 drives?

- markwollGuideWhen it rains it pours.
Reallocated sectors have me looking for a new disk.
My 750NS drives are no longer available so a 1tb is the next best.
I hate to buy consumer grade drives for a NAS so here we go.
The ST31000524NS is on the way.
I suppose that word will get around Real Soon Now if they work or not.
mark - Flash1AspirantIt does make me feel better knowing I'm far from the only user in this situation. My ST31000524NS arrived Friday. I'm currently "burning in" a WD15EARS for my mother and once I'm done with transferring over all her files, etc. I'm move on to my new drive. It will probably be the middle of next week before I get it installed in the NAS but I'll report back when it's in.
- IanSavApprenticeHi,
The first of my new Constellation disks has gone into my DUO. It seems to be working fine. The crash problems caused by the failing disk have stopped and all looks OK. Time will tell if there are any obscure problems.
Regards,
Ian. - markwollGuideJust a small bump to see what has been going on.
I have not installed my ST31000524NS yet.
There is an opportunity to get more for a better price.
Newegg has all internal harddrives 10% off 4/7-4/8 HDTEN is the checkout code.
mark - IanSavApprenticeHi mark,
Still no official comment from Netgear. My first Constellation drive, installed in a DUO, seems to be working OK. I am intending to get another of these drives to replace a failing drive in a NV.
Regards,
Ian. - IanSavApprenticeHi,
The drive still appears to be working okay. :) Unfortunately still no comment from Netgear. :(
Regards,
Ian. - markwollGuideThanks.
I think I will begin replacements this weekend.
mark - markwollGuideI replaced all four drives with the Constellations in order and did the volume expansion.
Very smooth.
Seems to run a little cooler with the newer drives.
I guess time will tell.

A user just reminded me that I never updated this thread. I added the Constellation drive back over two years ago when this thread was active. It expanded fine and [knock-on-wood] has been running fine since then. It still only has 597 "Power On Hours" on it in all that time.
Disk 1 Seagate ST31000340NS 931 GB
Disk 2 Seagate ST31000524NS 931 GB
Disk 3 Seagate ST31000340NS 931 GB
Disk 4 Seagate ST31000340NS 931 GB - blubstarAspirant@Flash: Thank you for that update and conratulations for your courage.
I know that the following questions are more personal/psychological, but you did it so I ask you:
Would you take the same risk (of the drive not running in the NV+)
a) with the newer Constellation ES.2 or ES.3?
b) with a mix of older 500GB drives and newer 2TB/3TB/4TB drives?
Which type of "challenges" you would expect?
I ask because, if it does NOT work, then I go get a newer NAS case (which I would need anyways) and are fine.
Thanx,
blubstar
