NV+ V2 4TB Hitachi drives?

Hi,

I previously only populated two of the four bays in my NV+ V2 mostly due to the cost of enterprise drives, but also because I never really needed the space. Now I think it may be time to add more space so would like some advice on this please.

My NV+ V2 is running in stock configuration - 256MB RAM - so I wondered if that could be upgraded and what would be the recommended / maximum? I have never had any trouble with Crucial RAM so would look there first for the correct type (what exactly would I need to look for?)

I initially fitted 2 x ST33000650NS in Flex-RAID mode (mirrored) which have been running fine.

I would like to add 2 x HGST Ultrastar 7K4000 HUS724040ALE640 with the intention of using them for HD video raw footage storage and editing in iMovie on my Mac, would the network link / speed from the ReadyNAS be fast enough for this? It runs through a small local Gigabit switch.

What is the theoretical maximum hard drive size for the NV+ V2, running RAIDiator 5.3.11?

Thank you.

  • The ram is soldered on, so it cannot be upgraded.

Generally there isn't uncompressed HD footage out there, it normally is at least compressed as motion jpeg. With RAID-1 you should get ~ 50 MB/sec write speeds and ~80 MB/sec read speeds according to this old review: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/nas/nas- ... ed?start=4

The v2 platforms have a max volume size of 16 TiB, so in RAID-1 they should be able to accept the largest drives currently available. However, there are support consequences to using drives off the HCL.
  • Well, considering that my NV+ V2 is out of support I don't think the support consequences will be of any consequence now. ;-)

Thank you for the info on the video and RAM. I just remember that the RAM in the Duo V1 was upgradable, though I doubt I will bother with that as I read on these forums there was no performance gain to be had except a small difference when running apps, which I don't really do on the ReadyNAS anyway.

Looks like I have nothing to lose from trying these Hitachi drives in the NV+ V2.
