How have you configured the NAS to work with the UPS? Do you have a USB cable connected between the UPS and the NAS? The NAS should be shutdown safely.
The proper way to test this is to connect the NAS power supply to a wall outlet and some other device to the UPS (which doesn't mind being unsafely shutdown) to drain the battery then unplug the power to the UPS.
The NAS should handle unsafe shutdowns gracefully in most cases but that may not always be the case.
