Hi Stephen,
Thank you very much for your exact pinpointing of the issue and i could figure out the solution also.
I was not able to connect my wired laptop to the wirelessly connected laptop due to a setting of Modem.
This setting is named 'Enable MultiAP Isolation'. It was on by default.
When i switched it off, i was able to make it work.
This solution resolved my issue related to NAS Drive as well.

You are entitled to 90 day phone support after purchase, so you can directly contact Netgear support (support.netgear.com)
Does the NAS respond to ping (with windows, open CMD then enter "ping 192.168.1.2")?
Also you might try https://192.168.1.2/admin again as sometimes it can take a while for the NAS to initialize the disk.
BTW, what hard drive model did you install?

Thanks for your reply.
1. Ping did not work.
2. https://192.168.1.2/admin also did not work.
3. Hard disk is WD 10EARX 1TB
I chatted with one of the support guys. He would replicate it at their end and see what the issue could be.
The configuration where i connect NAS drive to router and try to access it from my laptop which is connected to the modem through wireless connection does not work.
However if i connect my laptop to the modem through ethernet cable, i was able to ping as well as connect to /admin application and i was able to successfully set it up also.
But I wanted to setup the NAS drive so that I can access it on my wifi connected devices. So unless i m able to set it up that way, it would not solve my purpose.

This info is very helpful.
I am thinking that you have a gateway (not a pure modem) that has 4 local ethernet ports. And that you have the NAS connected to one of those ports, and a router connected to another port. Is that the case? If not, can you describe more completely how your network is set up?
Please also post the model numbers of the router and the modem.

Hi Stephen,
I have a wireless modem from Dlink, Model Number: DSL-2750u (http://www.amazon.in/D-Link-DSL-2750U-Wireless-4-Port-Router/dp/B007O7J026?tag=googinhydr18418-21&tag=googinkenshoo-21&ascsubtag=ca09983a-ab90-4e1a-9b76-a46a0ac9da8d). By the configuration and the way i m being using it, it is a wireless router.
Configuration of router and my setup goes like this:
1. Router (DSL-2750u) is connected to telephone line (which brings broadband to home)
2. My 2 laptops and, phones, printer, TV, all connected to the router wirelessly and i m able to access internet on all devices.
3. I m able to ping all these devices includng my phones from my laptop.
4. However i m not able to ping and access admin page of NAS drive if:
a. I connect my NAS drive to router through ethernet cable and
b. I connect my laptop to router through wireless.
I guess the setup of my home network is quite simple and NAS drive should have been able to setup quickly, which I m unable to.
