printing problems with windows 8

I have a ReadyNas Ultra 2 with a HP Color LaserJet CP1215 connected. the setup works fine with my windows 7 laptop and has done for some time. However with my new surface running the latest windows 8.1 files appear to print but no print appears on the printer, this works fine under windows 7 as does connecting the printer directly to the windows 8 device. is there any changes I could make to get the system to work. By the way I am running the latest firmware.
