Pro 6 Pioneer price with vs without hard drives

Hi. After reading lots of NAS reviews and comments I finally narrowed down my choice to the ReadyNAS Pro 6 Pioneer, with 6 WD RED WD30EFRX hard drives. However it seems Amazon.com has an empty one for about $1,000, http://www.amazon.com/Netgear-ReadyNAS-Pro-6-NAS/dp/B004I4FML6/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1359338455&sr=1-2&keywords=NETGEAR+RNDP6000 and the RED WD30EFRX hard drives are about $170 each. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=RED+WD30EFRX+hard+drives ...also amazon.com has a readynas pro 6 filled with 3 TB hard drives for about $5,000...http://www.amazon.com/Readynas-Pro-18TB-Unified-Na/dp/B00548QIS6/ref=sr_1_13?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1359339161&sr=1-13&keywords=ReadyNAS+Pro+6 ...obviously I am totally new to NAS but I need to start somewhere, so I am wondering why the Readynas Pro 6 filled with hard drives at amazon costs more than twice as much as if I bought an empty one plus the 6 hard drives separately.
...also, I read that the WD30EFRX hard drives are good for up to 5 bays...I don't understand how a hard drive would understand how many other bays there are in an enclosure, and also the WD30EFRX hard drives are listed in the compatability list...but is there a better choice for hard drives?...I don't need extra speedy hard drives, as I don't expect I will be streaming movies from it, although I might be playing and editing some videos on my computer. Thanks for helping me along.

The rndp6630 comes with enterprise-class drives which are quite expensive.

WD30EFRX are a good drive choice, and are certified by both Netgear and WDC for Pro-6. Populating all 6 bays should be fine.

You shouldn't be looking for a Pro 6 Pioneer though (part number RNDP600E-100) you want a RNDP6000-200 (just called a "Pro 6").
  • Ok, that helps a lot...thanks for your quick help. I'll probably go with the RNDP6000-200 already populated with the enterprise drives if I can find one in Canada...I guess the ones already populated would be put thru a bit of testing to make sure it's working ok....I also want to order 2 extra drives just incase I need to replace a failed drive, so I'd like to know the make and model of the drives that are in the NAS...do you know which drives they are? I looked here http://www.netgear.com/images/ReadyNAS_Pro_Series_DS_26Apr1118-13987.pdf but couldn't see the drive models.

I don't know what drives they ship (or if they are always the same). If this is for home use, I suggest buying it diskless and using the WD30EFRX.

You should also have a backup solution in place, as NAS can and do fail (potentially losing your data).
  • Ok, thanks again Stephen. I guess that's all the info I need. It is for home use. I have 3 backups of all my irreplaceable files...I have about 2,000 cds, so I'd want to put the music on the NAS in lossless form...if the NAS failed it would be a huge hassle but I'd still have the cds....also would store some videos on there...eventually I'd like to buy another NAS to backup my first one, but only if I could afford it....perhaps using your suggestion of buying it diskless and using the WD30EFRX drives will allow me to buy a second NAS sooner than later... ok now that I think about it, since a pre-built one is about twice the cost, it actually makes more sense to buy 2 diskless ones with a few extra hard drives, so I would likely have the equivalent reliability of a pre-built one along with a backup...I would only need to turn the second one on once in awhile so the power use would be about the same.
  • ...actually I think 9 Terrabytes would probably be enough for me, so I could just get one NAS and configure it for Raid 1...well, actually I'd probably have to hire someone to set it all up correctly for me...anyway, looks like I"m all set now, thanks.
