Purchasing Support for a Infrant 1100

I recently decomissioned my Infrant 1100 due to it being out of warranty but had the thought I might be able to purchase a warranty. I did a Warranty addon via the Netgear site but the only option it gave me was a OnCall 24x7 3 Yrs, Phone+NBD Replacement, Cat. 3. All I need is parts warranty and some phone support and phone support can be limited to 9:00am to 5:00pm.

Any idea if they offer a lower end support option that is a bit cheaper.

  • Unfortunately, the 1100 is EOL'd so there won't be any available extended warranty that you can purchase.

However you may still find the 1100 is useful for storing a backup for a newer NAS unit or data primarily stored on other devices. After all if important data is primarily stored on a single device it is not backed up. See Preventing Catastrophic Data Loss. The ReadyNAS 1100 supports drives from the Hard Disk HCL. With 4x2TB drives the 1100 provides about 5.4TB of storage using X-RAID.

Would recommend after backing up your data, you update to the latest firmware (currently 4.1.8: http://www.readynas.com/RAIDiator_4_1_8_Notes) and do a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything: http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_use_the_boot_menu). This will give you a clean setup on the latest firmware which includes 4k sector partition alignment (essential for support of some 2TB disks)

Many people have run ReadyNAS units for years with little to no issues even after the warranty has expired. If you have issues you can come onto the forum and the community can try to help. If it's used for an additional backup a bit of downtime may not matter too much.

However if you no longer wish to use the unit at all you may wish to consider selling it in the ReadyNAS Marketplace: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=33

ReadyNAS 1100 units purchased on/after August 21,2007 have a 5 year warranty from the data of purchase. Online support is what would be recommended to be used after the first 90 days since purchase (see http://www.readynas.com/support). Units purchased before August 21, 2007 would be out of warranty.

There are some good newer rackmount models such as the 2100, 3200, 3100 and 4200 which are much faster. It'd be recommended to purchase a ProSupport (http://www.readynas.com/ProSupport) contract to go with one of these newer models. You can't migrate disks from an 1100 to one of these (would need to transfer data e.g. across your network). You can compare the ReadyNAS models by looking at the Comparison Charts

2100 is 4-bay rackmount similar to the 1100 in that it has an Xchange module.
3100 is 4-bay rackmount and has dual hot-swappable power supplies.
3200 and 4200 are 12-bay rackmount with dual hot-swappable power supplies. 4200 is faster, has more RAM and has option to install two 10Gbit NICs via a dual-NIC PCIe card)

If not placed in the server room you might find the 3100, 3200 and 4200 a bit noisy.

    The 2100, 3100, 3200 and 4200 come with 5 year warranties.
