Questions about the ReadyNAS 424

1) No the RAM in the RN422 and RN424 is soldered on. If that is important to you you should consider the RN426, RN428 and the RN520 series. We don't support upgrading the RAM in any of our desktop units and we don't support using 3rd party RAM.
2) The RN424 uses samba for DFS. Samba is the Linux project that provides the SMB service. File versioning is done via snapshots of the BTRFS filesystem

4) We used to use one method for advertising SMB, but we now also use another for added reliability.
5) There is an option when creating a volume to encrypt the entire volume using an encryption key that'll be stored on a USB key. If the USB key is not connected the volume will fail to mount. You should have a few copies of the key on different devices (in case the USB key fails) and store the key in safe places.

1) Why would you say to consider the RN426, RN428 and the RN520 series if I want the option to upgrade the RAM and then say that you don't support upgrading the RAM in any of the desktop units. Are the units/series mentioned above not classed as desktop units? Also, how much RAM does a NAS box need when one person is using it like a local drive plus for some general backup stuff?
2) That's all and well, I don't know that much about DFS as have yet to have a DFS compatible NAS box. Is DFS replication possible with ReadyNAS OS?
5) Can one use a conventional alphanumeric password to encrypt a volume/share rather than a USB Key?

1) You can upgrade the memory in the RN426, RN428 and RN520 series even though it's not supported. For most users upgrading the RAM should only have a marginal benefit. All the models you and I mentioned are desktop units. We do have some rackmount models that we sell memory modules for.
2) DFS Replication is not possible. There are a number of ways you can backup your data though.
5) No. The encryption key is stored in a file on a USB key.
