I have a netgear readynas nvx rddx400e nas with 3x2TB WD Red drives configured as RAID5. Last night, I tried to power off the device by holding down the button on the front. I did power off but not before making two loud popping noises and a strong burning smell from the device. At this point I have a few choices: - get the psu replaced OR - get the main board replaced OR - get a new NAS the first two i can handle, but this question is about the last choice: which newer ReadyNAS device is backwards compatible to my failed NAS? what I specifically want is to purchase the newer device, mount the old drives in it and boot to get to my data. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.SolvedQuestions about the ReadyNAS 424
I am new here and am concidering getting a Netgear ReadyNAS 424. I currentley have a Asustor AS-5004T and want to upgrade it to something better what must incldude native windows based File versioning support (Previous Versions) for SMB shares held on the NAS. My current setup is as follows, I have 2 x 6TB WD Red Pro HDD's inside my exsiting NAS box confiqured in RAID 1 along with a 4TB Red Pro drive used for weekley archiving. I also have a another 6TB WD Red Pro HDD inside my Windows 2016 Essentials rack server what acts as a backup to my main 6TB RAID 1 array. I have a few questions about the ReadyNAS 424, and hopefully those reading will be able to ansewer for me. 1) Can the RAM on the ReadyNAS 424 be upgradded, and if so to how much and what type? I have 8GB in my AS-5004T at the moment and is of the 1600MHz DDR3L SO-DIMM type. (Will 2GB be enough!? , my NAS is my main storage for daily usage and not just a backup/archive) 2) At what level does the ReadyNAS 424 support DFS and file versioning. I would like it to idealy integrate with the DFS capabilitys of Windows Server and have the 6TB drive inside my Rack Server cross syncronise the SMB shares on the ReadyNAS 424 ? 3) Does the ReadyNAS 424 support 802.3AD link aggregation? (I have a Draytek VigorSwitch P2261) 4) How reliable is the ReadyNAS 424?, I am allways having reliability isues with SMB shares shared via UPnP on my Asustor NAS box to my Denon network audio streamer that is part of my Hi-Fi. Sometimes it works fine, othertimes my Denon network audio streamer cannot see the shares on my Asustor NAS box! (All hard wired, no Wi-Fi or Mains LAN senders) 5) Does the ReadyNAS 424 support share/folder encryption what has to be unlocked by a password on starting the unit up. (In case the unit gets stolen.) Also, below suggests that ReadyNAS OS6 supports DFS, what I thought was a proprietary technology to Windows and was not available on Linux based NAS boxes? https://kb.netgear.com/23090/How-do-I-use-DFS-feature-on-the-ReadyNAS-OS-6-storage-system Lastly , anythoughts on the ReadyNAS 424 in general? Earlier this year my ReadyNAS got double booted in a very short period of time following a power outage that lasted longer than my backup. Afterwards it appeared the PS was dead. I did diligent research here and found a suggestion to buy a Kentec power supply. Although I should have read more, I assumed a PS reccomendation would be plug and play, although I saw some wiring changes would need to be made. I assumed the PS itself would bolt right in. Turns out the sizes are very different. I am writing this to get the word out in case others think they need to buy the Kentec. I hadn't taken my PS out, so I read you could only get them in Europe for a higher price than the Kentec and would still have to get it shipped. Thinking the Kentec would bolt right in and I only needed to solder a couple wires, I ordered one. Unfortunately that was in June and now it is August and I am trying to put it in and finding the two boxes are totally different. Now that I had my PS out, a Seasonic SS-300SFD, I googled it, and sure enough, they are at Newegg and who knows where else... $39 and free shipping and the Kentec was $28. Is it worth dealing with an incompatible box to save $12... Turns out that since I waited two months to install it, I can no longer return the Kentec. At this point I am debating having a new PS that is now a door stop, and spend the additional $39 to get the right PS. I could no longer respond to the topics where this PS was suggested, so I am creating a new topic to raise the question of why someone would suggest a physically incompatible drive to save $12? I guess another option is to have the PS hang out the back somewhere.... As an aside, the Seasonic is 300W and the suggested replacement Kentec is 250W. Please explain what I am not getting here and why this Kentec was suggested, and are people really using these as replacements? Thanks!Netgear ReadyNas 104

Hard Drive recommendations?
Hello NETGEAR and ReadyNAS Community, I just purchased my first NAS, the six-bay RN526X, along with the five-bay EDA500 expansion chassis with sixth-bay hot spare. My plan is to use six 4TB drives in a Flex-RAID6 volume on the RN526X, and five 4TB drives on the EDA500 in a Flex-RAID5 volume with a hot spare. I want to set up the ReadyNAS to back up the data from the main unit to the EDA500 every night. I've been trying to narrow down my hard drive selection, and have been considering the following combinations: 12 HGST (Hitachi) DeskStar NAS 4TB drives for both units; or Six WD Gold 4TB drives for the RN526X, with six WD Red 4TB drives for the EDA500; or 12 WD Red 4TB drives for both units I've found where to buy the latest model of HGST's DeskStar NAS 4TB drives, HDN726040ALE614. Unfortunately, when checking NETGEAR's ReadyNAS Hard Drive Compatibility List, this current drive model is not listed as compatible for either the RN526X or EDA500 (perhaps it is too new?). None of the Hitachi DeskStar NAS 4TB drive models currently listed as compatible are current, but legacy (meaning discontinued and difficult or impossible to buy new with warranty), according to page 2 of HGST's product sheet. Given this, and Netgear's statement on their Hard Drive Compatibility List that "NETGEAR Support can and will deny support on devices using drives not found on the official compatibility list," I have several questions for NETGEAR: Is the HDN726040ALE614 compatible with the RN526X and EDA500, and if so, will NETGEAR add it to the official compatibility list? Would I still be able to get support via these forums from NETGEAR and/or is my NETGEAR warranty affected in any way if I were to use this specific HGST drive model before it is added to the official compatiblity list (assuming it is compatible)? For the ReadyNAS Community: I am reconsidering getting any WD Reds after having to dig out my old PC to run the DOS-based WDIDLE3 utility on a pair of c. 2014 WD Greens to fix their "Intellipark" head-parking issue. I have read that some of the WD Reds have the same issue, and do not relish the thought of connecting six or 12 of them to my old PC to prevent some or all from parking the disk heads every eight seconds. Can anyone who recently purchased WD Red 4TB drives, model WD40EFRX, confirm that theirs did NOT suffer from this issue? In the WD Reds' favor, they do spin at a lower RPM (which should still be enough to saturate my gigabit Ethernet connection). I am slightly concerned about intermittent reports of heat and/or noise generated by the HGSTs in comparison, but encouraged by their reportedly superior reliability. I would like to order the hard drives ASAP as my new NAS units will be here soon, but I don't want to make a choice I will regret in regards to drive compatibility or reliability. Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated. Looking forward to having my data protected with Btrfs & ECC RAM. :) Thanks!WDC WD6002FRYZ-31WD5B0 bad or compatibility issue?
Hello, I've installed a new hard drive Disk Model:WDC WD6002FRYZ-31WD5B0 to replace another one in my unit ReadyNAS 4220. The hard drive is listed on ReadyNAS Hard Disk Compatibility List This disk should be compatible based on the test result of another disk in the same series from the disk manufacturer. https://kb.netgear.com/20641/ReadyNAS-Hard-Disk-Compatibility-List?cid=wmt_netgear_organic I have exported the logs from the unit and can see as follows: 1) disk_info log: Device: sdf Controller: 0 Channel: 1 Model: WDC WD6002FRYZ-31WD5B0 Firmware: 01.01MS3 Class: SATA RPM: 7200 Sectors: 11721045168 Health data ATA Error Count: 0 Reallocated Sectors: 0 Reallocation Events: 0 Spin Retry Count: 0 Current Pending Sector Count: 0 Uncorrectable Sector Count: 0 Temperature: 37 Start/Stop Count: 2 Power-On Hours: 1 Power Cycle Count: 2 Load Cycle Count: 2 2) systemd-journal is full of Mar 20 20:11:40 nasXXXXX kernel: ata2.00: status: { DRDY ERR } Mar 20 20:11:40 nasXXXXX kernel: ata2.00: error: { ABRT } Mar 20 20:11:40 nasXXXXX kernel: ata2.00: configured for UDMA/133 Mar 20 20:11:40 nasXXXXX kernel: ata2: EH complete Mar 20 20:11:40 nasXXXXX kernel: ata2.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0 Mar 20 20:11:40 nasXXXXX kernel: ata2.00: irq_stat 0x40000001 Mar 20 20:11:40 nasXXXXX kernel: ata2.00: failed command: READ DMA EXT Mar 20 20:11:40 nasXXXXX kernel: ata2.00: cmd 25/00:08:00:f4:a0/00:00:ba:02:00/e0 tag 15 dma 4096 in res 51/04:08:00:f4:a0/00:00:ba:02:00/40 Emask 0x1 (device error) I'm almost sure the hard drive needs to be replaced again. But before I get a 2nd exactly the same one I would appreciate if someone could confirm that the particular model is really compatible. Thank in advance!Fan Failure on ReadyNas Ultra6
Hello, I have 2 Netgear ReadyNAS storage units today I recieved an email telling me that the Fan2 in the device is failing with low RPM I called the store I purchase this device and they told me because it's 6 years old I cannot get a replacement fan through them. So I though I would see what can be done to correct this issue. I am hoping I can get a fan so I don't need to purchase another device as it's still working just one of the fans have failed. Any suggestions appreciated.
