Raidiator 4.2.22 (x86) fan noise too loud on Ultra 6

I have a pair of Ultra 6 boxes in my living room. Normally, these boxes have their drives spun down due to inactivity, and the fan noise from the boxes is inaudible even when standing next to the boxes.

Since 4.2.22 was installed, the fan noise is very audible, even from 12 feet away. I checked the setup and the drives are still set to spin down when inactive, and do appear to be spun down as normal.

I never used to hear the fan noise in these boxes unless their drives had been spun up and active for a long while.

You should probably try the fan calibration procedure first. If that doesn't work, you could try downgrading back to 4.2.21 or 4.2.20, and see if you get the old behavior.
  • It might also be time to pull the side off and blow/suck out the dust.
  • Same issue. I have a Ultra 4 Plus, and after upgrading from 4.2.21 to 4.2.22, the fan often runs much faster (louder) at the same ambient temperature as before. In some ways, this may be a good thing though as it extends the lifetime of the machine and disks if they run cooler - perhaps Netgear has lowered the target temperatures, causing it to run faster. As I write though, it has dropped from 2800RPM all the way to 1603RPM with CPU=51C and SYS=36C. Disks range from 40-42C (Disk 2 is always the hottest in the sandwich). Now at 1762RPM.

Can other users please post their CPU/SYS temps, disk temps and fan speed?
  • Although my unit is an NVX Business Edition, not an Ultra, it does have the same chassis. Fan has always been quiet, currently 1875 RPM with two outside disks at 32c and two inside disks at 34c. (Bays 1 and 2 are 3TB Hitachi green and 3 and 4 are 1TB Seagate 7200RPM drives). System temp is 38c, CPU temp is not separately reported.
