The DM series of drives is a poor chooice for a NAS. Are you sure you have a V2? Netgear has used the "V2" nomenclature twice. A true V2 says so right on the front (not just on a sticker on the bottom or rear) and has a model number that ends with -200NAS (not -100NAS). If you actually have a V1 with a sticker that says V2, then it does not support 4TB drives.
I am unclear on what you mean by "the drive does work". It works in the NAS even though being labeled "dead", or it works in a PC you used to test it? If it works in the NAS but is still declared "dead", that's one of the potential issues with any of the "green" drives like the DM series, though this would be the first time I heard about it on a V2.
