Ready NAS 204 - only shuts down every second time
Hello,
The following processes ran optimally up to Release 6.10.5:
- Detection of a USB-HD with always the same name 'USB_HDD_1'
- The system switched off completely when shutting down
Both points are no longer guaranteed with Release 6.10.6 and the current 6.10.7.
It seems the shutdown works every second time, otherwise the system displays
something with 'Goodbye' and the blue LED flashes.
The plug must be pulled and plugged in again to restart the system.
The detection of USB-HDs works somehow randomly. Sometimes it is the previous
name 'USB_HDD_1', sometimes 'USB_HDD_18'. This is very bad because I have some
automatic backups running on this HD.
In some cases, the name change even seems to happen during ongoing operations.
With Release 6.10.5 none of these problems existed.
Is there a chance of correction?
Otherwise I am very satisfied with the system. Of course it could be faster. But OK for my needs.
Thanks very much

Have you gone back to the old version and verified the problem is in the firmware, or are you assuming there is cause and effect here without recognizing another potential cause: time?
Your power-off problem sounds to me more like one associated with the standby voltage in the NAS, which controls the on/off circuit, especially since I've seen no similar reports in the forum. I don't know if the standby voltage has anything to do with USB ports on the 204, as I don't have one. In typical designs they wouldn't (bad idea to add potential load to standby voltage), but I have seen at least one comment here in the forum that the USB power stays on even when the NAS is off on some models, which would mean it's also powered by the standby voltage.
The standby voltage is what powers the power-on and NIC circuits (and maybe USB) so you can turn the NAS on via button or WoL. It is created from the input 12V internal to the NAS, and it stays on through power cycles. So, that circuity is on when the rest of the NAS, including the fan, is off, unless power is disconnected.

Thanks for your help post.
I'm a layman. But the system had been running without problems for more than 4 years up to Release 6.10.5. They only appeared exactly after the change to 6.10.6 and also a few months later with 6.10.7.
Nothing has changed in the hardware or infrastructure of the system.
Therefore I suspect a strong causal connection in the two releases.

I believe Sandshark is suggesting that you revert to the older firmware, and see if the problems disappear.
You'd do this by downloading the arm binary for 6.10.5 from https://kb.netgear.com/000063642/ReadyNAS-OS-6-Software-Version-6-10-5 Extract the binary from the zip file, and then manually install it from the system->settings page in the web ui.
