ReadyNas 102 new hdd not detected

Hello, I just bought a new HDD ( ST2000NT001 - Seagate IronWolf 2 TB) but when I insert it in my readynas 102 it is not detected.

I know that this disk is not in the HCL (hardware compatibility list) but so far I have a SDD that was in also inserted in the readynas 102 and it is correctly detected even tought this one is not on the list either.

I tried many thing including :

  • many factory reset (either from the Web UI or using the super intuitive paperclip mecanism)
  • inserting only one disk
  • putting the disk on the tray and inserting half of the tray (to be sure that the disk is connected to the SATA + alim port)
  • using a physical disk cloner to clone the working SSD on the new HDD
  • inserting it in slot 1 or 2 either with another disk or all alone

I connected the HDD to another machine and it was well detected by gparted (I could manipulate it,  create partition and stuff).

The ReadyNas was using something like ReadyNasOS 6.2.5 and I managed to update it to 6.10.10.

This update didn't solve my problem.

So, to sum this up:

The NAS is still working, it's firmware is up to date, the disk is new and working - detected on any other machine but not on my NAS.

Any help and idea is welcomed as I fall into despair.

  • erf, I reflected a bit over what you said about the disk not getting enough power and I found the cause : I couldn't find the right alim for the nas so I picked something that was matching the connector => a block with 12V - 1A. I tried with another one, this time 12v - 3A and now the NAS can detect the disk (disk led is alight, disk is detected on the web UI).

    I feel so dumb --'

Thanks for your help and time.

Did you mean 20 TB?  Or did you type the wrong disk model?

FWIW, I have see a few posts here from folks using 18 TB drives in their RN102 NAS, but I haven't seen anything bigger.

The NAS will run the short built-in smart test before it adds the drive - have you tried running that on your other PC?

Also, if you use ssh on the NAS, can you see the drive?

No, I really meant 2 TB and I took the reference on the shop where I bought the disk.

Anytools recommended to test the disk on PC, I'm mostly using linux (but can use windows as well) ? is it for using SMART thing to monitor the disk state ?

I used ssh and the disk is not detected in /dev.

But it kinda seems like the disk is detected during the NAS boot process (the disk led is on when the NAS is booting, but after few second ~10s it's going off).

My bad, I mentally added a 0 to your model number (ST20000NT001).   So the size certainly is not the issue.

I suggest using Seatools to check it.

It's available for both Windows and Linux platforms.

Anyway, I ran seatools with the "quick test" feature, it passed without any error or warning (the disk is new so I wouldn't have expected otherwise). I can run an extended one if you want.

    Interesting.

FWIW, my own practice is to run the

    • quick test
    • extended test
    • write test (single pass overwrite)

before I put the disk into the NAS.  That is because I've some out-of-the-box disks pass the extended test, but fail the write test - and vice-versa.

You could run the extended tests, but the NAS normally would just do the short smart test - which I think is the same as the quick test.

Just wondering - did you try swapping the tray, and see if that makes any difference?  I'm thinking that maybe the power or SATA connection isn't quite there.

Quick test and expanded test both passed, didn.t found write test in SeaTools but the disk cloner managed to copy data from the SSD that was in the NAS onto the new HDD, so I assume that writing data on that disk works too.

I did not try swapping the trays but I did try inserting the disk either on slot 1 or 2. (SSD was pinned with screws on its tray). I also tried putting the disk on the tray and only inserting the sliding part of the tray (to make sure that the HDD would be connected to the SATA and alim port) then sliding the rest of the tray.

Also, the SSD is detected on both slot, so the problem is not one of them not working.

I feel like its software related and not really hardware related as the disk led is on when the NAS is booting but off once the NAS is completly started.
