ReadyNas 104
I am able to browse my Nas inside my network, but not able to check for updates. Please see pic below.
It says:
Cannot Connect. Communication error. Check your Internet connection, DNS Settings, or proxy settings.
I have internet and check the NAS is getting an IP address and also DNS.
Any help is appreciated.

Everyone is seeing that, so it is not your system.
What firmware are you running?

Still an issue for me on 2025-03-06@10:26 AM NY time. Thanks to those who've already contributed. I hope that someone from Netgear would provide official word of what's happening, other than, "That 104 product is EOL so you're on your own."
Provide a fix or a direct statement that no other updates will happen so stop trying, or something similar. It's sloppy and creates excessive uncertainty for long time Netgear customers to have it spitting an error each time you click the "CHECK for UPDATE" link.
I respectfully request that Netgear provide some official word. Thanks in advance for any official info!

Netgear has normally announced firmware updates before they are available on the update server. They have made no announcement of an update, so why do you keep trying to get something that doesn't exist? Many who updated to 6.10.10 found they wished they had not when they found that app upload was disabled. So I recommend everyone turn off the update process so that they can evaluate the release notes before they do something else they'll regret.

While you may consider "End of Life" different than "End of Service" the results are the same.
https://www.netgear.com/about/eos/
"When a product reaches its End of Service (EOS) stage, NETGEAR discontinues firmware updates and maintenance releases (including security updates.) This policy applies to products that are at the end of their product lifecycle, are technologically obsolete, and have not been manufactured for three or more years (or longer where required by law).
Older products that are past their EOS date may no longer provide the protection and performance you deserve. To help you stay informed, NETGEAR provides a 90-day notice on this site for products nearing their EOS date."
The link to the EOS page is found near the bottom of the RN104 Product Page under "Resources".

Why keep trying? Some of us who are directly responsible for this hardware and are directed to keep in running as well as possible, think it's worthwhile to see if any security updates are provided - as responsible vendors often do even for EOL products.
Is anyone aware of alternate firmware that's been successful? I've read that installing OpenMediaVault (OMV) on a Netgear ReadyNAS 104 is possible. Beware of possible issues, and make sure you have a good backup of your data if you're going to try. You could brick your device.
I still think Netgear should provide a better result when you click the upgrade button in the 104 GUI. The error message we currently get is useless. Thanks, and best luck.
