ReadyNas 426 usb backup

I have a Readynas 426 with 6 x 1tb hdd.  Works fine and has been since day 1.  I would like to start making backups via USB ports.  I purchased a Lacie Rugged Mini 4TB USB 3.0 hdd and plugged in.  System doesnt see it.  My computer does, its format in NTFS.  I dont really want to use EXT4 because of compatibility with my computer at home.  I could always install drivers for it, but I wish to keep it simple.

Does anybody have any clues or personnal guidelines to follow other than those on the website?  I followed and read on the subject but cant find a compatibility list.  As per Netgear website, keeping a list would be too long.

THanks

Ian

  • Does the USB disk have its own power supply or is it powered over the USB port? If the latter it's possible that not enough power is being provided to the drive to use it. If you have an AC powered USB hub you could try putting this in-between the USB disk and the NAS.

If you download the logs zip do you see any log entries related to the USB disk? Also what's the date of the BIOS in bios_ver.log?

No power supply, directly from USB port only.  Its a portable USB 2.5'' hdd, 5400rpm, very basic hdd.  I dont have a USB Hub.  I'll try to get log files.

USB3 is rated for 900mA.  I have no way to verify the ReadyNAS is providing the specified 900mA, and LaCie clearly doesn't understand what a "spec sheet" is, because theirs has no current draw listed.  That rating is the minimum to be USB3 compliant, and devices may provide more.  So it could work on other devices and not the ReadyNAS if it needs more than 900mA to spin up.  Do you hear it trying to spin up and failing?  Unfortunately, the 426 doesn't have any side-by-side USB ports to use with a Y cable, which your User's Manual does state might be required (a hint that it may need more than 900mA).  So a powered hub may be your only solution.

Did you try it on both the front and rear ports?
