ReadyNAS-516 OS 6.x symbols & maximum characters in passwords allowed

Good day, folks.

Can somone tell me, please:

  1. what the maximum number of characters are that OS 6.x will accept for passwords, specifically the admin password; and
  2. exactly what special characters are permitted in the passwords, specifically the admin password

In trying to make my ReadyNAS more secure, I created a new admin account (with a password length of 70 - don't laugh), but when I tried to login with the new admin account username/password combination, they were not accepted.  The username had only alphabetic characters & was only 9 characters long, so it must've been the password that was causing the hiccup.

Yeah, lotsa people will laugh at my password length... call me paranoid, but there's no such thing as being too safe on the Internet :smileywink:.  Many sites accept passwords that long, as well as the Netgear forums here, and I also have 2 other NAS units (from Sy*****gy) that accept password that long.

Tried searching the forums here & the Internet, but the search results were all for forgotten passwords & resets.

Thanks in advance & have a great day.

Regards,

John

  • You say "there's no such thing as being too safe on the Internet".. Are you exposing your NAS to the internet?  While a strong password is certainly a good idea, not exposing the device to the Internet at all, unless you have a specific need to do so, is the best protection.

Nope.  None of my NAS devices are exposed to the Internet.  There's no access to my LAN at all from the outside, except myself VPNing in through my SonicWall.

However, if through a virus or trojan or something else someone does gain access, hence me securing all my devices as much as possible, which includes 2FA-only admin access to my Sy*gy NAS devices :smileyhappy:.
