I agree that DLNA (and Apple TV) can be temperamental. So the details on the player will help sort out if this is a good idea or not.
Does she have internet service? If so, you could also administer the NAS remotely (loading new shows onto it for her, etc). If not, then replacing the USB thumb drive with a USB hard drive (holding more shows) might be the way to go.
