You wouldn't be adding the drives to the NAS. You'd be (optionally) upgrading the firmware on the unused NAS, and then installing all the drives from the old NAS in the original slots (with no other drives). Then power up.
It is reasonable safe, but there are volume checks done as part of the boot process that could fail, and result in file loss.
Linux Reader is purely passive, so you could try that method first.
