Mar 28, 2020Readynas duo V2
Hi Everyone
I really hope some can really help me as I am stressing out over my ReadyNas Duo V2 with 2 X 2TB Western Digital WD20EFRX WD Red disks.
Over recent weeks I have noticed that I lose connectivity to the nas box. I am normally playing some white nose in the background for my young son which plays repeatdly, it suddenly stops and then I find I cannot access the admin page and have to power the NAS from the switch.
When it powers back on again, the problem is ok and then it will continue normal for a few weeks and then the problem manifests itself again.
However last few occasions when checking the logs it reports ATA errors and warns me about a disk failure so I what I have been trying to do is copy files from a share on the ReadyNAS to cloud storage, its been a long process but I have found I am having problems just copying the data from there, the ReadyNAS middway will just lose connectivity again and I have to continue the process where it left off which is time consuming.
However the last time I did this it now seems I have lost all my shares. The nas boots up fine, I have also performed a disk check at startup but still nothing.
This is stressing me out as I have kept every photo on there expecting that I would have the protection.
As a test I removed what I believe is the faulty disk and I have been able to now access the shares.
I have now in a position that I need to get my files off here as quickly as possible. If the working disk failures I am screwed. What would be the best way for me to do this? Clearly my way of using an app like richcopy or synctoy isnt working and I am finding that its crashing all the time. Any advice on this would be appreciated.
There is a backup button on there but I am struggling to find any literature on how exactly this works. Can someone advise?
Many Thanks
P.S I have downloaded the logs, please let me know which files would be useful for me to send over, happy to do this if it will help.

Unfortunately RAID isn't enough to protect your data - after you get through this you should consider putting a backup plan in place. Much less stressful...
Is your NAS running 4.1.x firmware or 5.3.x?
Do you know which disk is generating the ATA errors?

Hi
The firmware is 5.3.11. I am trying to update it to 5.3.13 however have had issues.
I understand that ATA errors can occur when the NAS has to be powered down forcefully which is what I have had to do when it has become unresponsive.
So maybe the disks are still ok. Anyhow I am not taking the risk, I am currently taking the data off and moving to the cloud and have already ordered some replacement disks and will plan to factory reset the device once the data is off.
One thing that I would like to know is if there is anywhere (I assume using SSH) that I could get useful information to help me understand the root cause of the issue, why does the NAS suddently freeze. I like to know that so I can plan better for the future.
Many Thanks

Actually, you can get a lot of information from the logs in the downloaded logs .zip file. To get more information from SSH, the best thing is to have an open SSH session all the time so you can use it when the problem occurs. The execute top and see if something is taking up an inordinate amount of CPU time.
