ReadyNAS not being recognized by the network

Directly connecting the NAS to your PC will work. If you are using DHCP with the NAS it will fail over to IP 192.168.168.168. If you set your PC address to 192.168.168.100 (for instance) you will be able to see the NAS with RAIDar, and also connect to it with your browser or CIFS. I'd say it is worth a try, though it does not seem likely that you have a network problem from your description (unless the NAS NIC card has failed, in which case direct connect will fail too). I would focus more on the disk.
If you have a spare disk, you can try (a) powering down the nas, (b) removing your current disk, (c) putting in the new one. If the NAS formats the spare and comes up ok, then you likely have a disk failure.
Connecting your current disk up to your PC (SATA or USB) would let you see the SMART stats, and run vendor diags on the disk (non-destructive).
