ReadyNAS NV+ (RND4000) vs ReadyNAS Pro Pioneer (RNDP600)

Hi,

I have a ReadyNAS NV+ v1 (RND4000) and I've been offered to buy a ReadyNAS Pro Pioneer (RNDP600E) for roughly €350/$450 incl 3 x 1Tb, but I can't decide if it is a good deal or not. So now I ask you guys for advice.

I've looked at the Netgear website and Googled and so forth but I can't really make up my mind as if the RNDP600 is enough faster/better/etc then the RND4000, and hence if it is worth the hassle and money to switch boxes. So, does anyone have any experience with these two boxes?

I am happy with the NV+ but it is maxed out with 4 x 2Tb disks in it (i.e 5.5Tb with X-RAID) and I'm going to run our of space within a few month so I have to do something. If I'm reading the HCL right the RNDP600 can handle up to 4Tb disks and have 6 disks so with X-RAID 2 I should be able to get up to 17-18Tb of space (6 x 4 = 24 - 4Tb = 20 - 10% = 18Tb). However, I'll probably start with the 4 x 2Tb and then add disks as I need the extra space.

In this forum I have also read about the memory upgrade to 4Gb from the standard 1Gb (viewtopic.php?f=24&t=29070). However I fail to see if the the RNDP600 is significantly faster with 4Gb and I fail a confirmation if the PAE support have been implemented in later releases of firmware. I it suggested that it is, but it is not confirmed.

What I'm also looking for is speed comparisons of these boxes. I've look at Netgear, SmallNetBuilder, Toms HW Guide, etc but I can't really find any good info. Does anybody have any good suggestions?

For those who want to check links

RND4000 - http://support.netgear.com/product/RND4 ... 29#wrapper

So, what do you think? Should I buy it or not?

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

The Pro Pioneer is a lot, lot faster. Users have even done RAM upgrades to 8 (2x4) GB RAM (I would update to the latest firmware - currently 4.2.25 - before attempting any RAM upgrades and do make sure you run a few passes of the memory test boot option before trusting the memory) and there's also a long running thread on doing CPU upgrades (make sure you update the BIOS - note this is not the same as the firmware - first if the latest is not already installed if you want to do a CPU upgrade): https://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=29284

Do be aware of a few expansion limitations:
    1. Can't expand by more than 8TB over the life of the volume. So if your volume capacity was 5.5 TB when you last did a factory default you can't expand beyond 13.5 TB
    2. Cannot expand past 16TB. You have to do a factory default with the capacity in place.

The Pro Pioneer and Pro Business Edition share the same hardware. The Pro should be able to max out a gigabit link or go pretty close which is likely over 3x the speed you are getting at the moment. Of course actual speeds obtained will likely depend on whether your client machine can keep up and whether you are using ethernet or wireless.

The Pro is an End of Life product like the NV+, but there are still maintenance firmware updates. If you can confirm it's a working unit before you buy it's a good buy. The current product with better performance the RN516 is much more expensive.

The Pro has the same web-admin interface you are familiar with on your NV+.

You can install the latest OS ReadyNAS OS 6 which has a nice new web-admin interface on the unit, if you want.
