Readynas Pro 6 (Dropped Rx)

Hi guys,

It's been a week that I have been running my new PRO 6 and have been noticing dropped Rx packets every day.

Here are the stats from my bond nic:

TX packets 3615
TX errors 0
TX dropped 0
TX overruns 0
TX carrier 0
RX packets 7116
RX errors 0
RX dropped 10 (varies)
RX overruns 0
RX frame 0
Collisions 0

Dropped Rx count will vary depending on whether I am transferring data to my other PRO. Moreover, when I check each nic individually I seen no dropped rx errors.

What might be causing this? (A faulty nic chipset? Does the nic require a driver update?) All ethernet cables are new and hooked up to my GS108T switch and each port has flow control enabled as all my devices have gigabit nics. I have also checked the switch logs and see no errors. Both Readynas Pros have LACP teaming enabled as well.

  • Dropped packets are not always a sign of problems. eg May be caused by an application running on the NAS dropping an internet connection such as Bittorrent

I am not running Bittorrent on the PRO6, however, I have Transmission running on the other PRO. The PRO 6 has no addon apps running other than the usually services (i.e. FTP, AFP, etc.).

I wonder why I do not see any rx drops on my old PRO where I am running a battery of applications.

    Thanks.
  • FWIW - I always have some rx/tx errors or dropped packets logged. Extremely small number compared to the total packets sent/received. I've always put it down to machines connecting & disconnecting at various times, or the occasional wireless drop out (stone walls & floors don't help)

So - are you seeing any issues?

A machine running bittorrent and not reporting any connection issues seems more puzzling to me
  • I am running Transmission on my PRO and guarantee you that I have never seen dropped rx packets via Frontivew. (Of course, when I use NTOP or PHPLogCon things become more revealing. Truncated packets, etc.) I am not running addons such as a torrent application on the PRO 6. Maybe I should try to install NTOP and PHPLogCON to see if I can come up with more detailed information.

One thing I did forget to mention, the dropped rx counts appear on the PRO 6 when it is running in conjunction with other machines on the network. Could it be that the PRO 6 nic's chipset is more sensitive to data packets pushed across the lan?
  • If you really want to investigate then you need to run something - preferably on the NAS - to figure the source of the dropped packets
  • Have to admit, I sometimes wonder just what those stats are really reporting:

Yeah, I'm always suspicious about accuracy of stats.

Dropped packets are supposed to be packets that the NIC card receives but has no place to put. There are two causes I know of (in theory) - one is that the receiver doesn't have enough buffering, the second is that the receiver isn't expecting / reading packets from that particular source. I expect the second scenario is happening here. You could confirm this by setting up VLC (or some other streamer) to send something to the NAS, and see if the dropped stats go up.
