You can, but the drives are a big part of the load, so it won't be comprehensive.  But it's better than completely unloaded.

Did you try powering it on with the button with the drives removed?

When the NAS was "idle", was it plugged in and the rear switch on?  If so, was it in a potentially hot environment?

I suspect your problem is with the power-on circuit, especially if you did have it plugged in during the idle time and more especially if it could have gotten warm.  One big part of that power-on circuit is the +5VSB (5 volt standby) power which is on whenever the unit is plugged in and the switch is on.  So those circuits remain powered and are susceptible to wear and damage even when the NAS is "off".  That's the most common power supply failure in a ReadyNAS.

If you can't turn it on with the button and you can by grounding the green wire, then the power-on circuit is almost certainly where the problem lies.  If it has no Ethernet activity light when powered that way, then the +5VSB of the supply is the likely issue (the Ethernet circuit is also powered by it so WoL works).

Do you have a "spare" ATX supply?  You can plug it in externally and see if that fixes it before you invest in a replacement supply.
