readynas ultra 4 4 ST2000DL003 2tb seagate drives

This may sound like a very strange question, but here goes. I currently have 4 2tb drives installed. My fear is one of the drives is going bad, im getting a continuous beep. What i want to know, Can i replace the drive with a 1.5 for temporary purpose without losing data. any advice is appreciated. oh and btw, this is my last purchase of seagates. qc is beyond belief.

No you cannot replace a hard disk with a lower capacity one. It's eXpandable-RAID not shrinkable RAID.

There are times when it would be convenient if you could permanently remove a drive from the array w/o doing a factory reset, as well as downsizing a drive in the array. Obviously this couldn't be automatic.
  • thx, kinda new the answer, just wanted verification, Its my fault, i saw the decent reviews but should of went with past experience. Its sad that compitition is dwindling, anyway enough rambling, will never ever buy a seagate product again
