ReadyNAS Ultra 6 and WD 18TB Works on 4.2.28
I got an 18TB WD enterprise drive from other world computing at the tail end of last year when they had a nice sale on it. Before putting it to use in another nas I'm setting up, I thought why not see what happens if I put it in the ultra 6 since I have only a single 12TB and have lots of drive slots free.
Well, the results had absolutely no drama and just worked. :) The 12TB volume was being mirrored to the 18TB at nearly 200MB/s. I shut down the unit and removed the 18TB and rebooted and my original 12TB is working fine just like is normally does.
So looks like the maximum size now for the ultra 6 breaks the 100TB mark at 108TB. :) Can't wait to see someone stuff the drives in one of these as they're really stout as a simple file serving nas.

The expansion limits for the 4.2.x firmware are
- You cannot expand a volume over 16 TiB
- You cannot create a volume over 16 TiB if you use unequal size disks
- You cannot expand a volume more than 8 TB larger than it's initial size.
In general, I recommend converting 64 bit 4.2.x systems (like the Ultra 6) to OS-6. It doesn't have these capacity limits, supports SMB 3, and has other features that are missing in 4.2.x.

And the good thing is if you don't need a single large volume or raided volume, this unit still works really well. Especially if you're not using smb and are doing other things like iscsi. The main thing is that it can handle drives >!6TB and that means it will probably handle even the 20TB and 22TB drives when they come out and probably even larger. If we get to 50TB drives, it will be able to pack 1/3 of a PB into such a small space. :smileyhappy:
The reason I don't look at OS6 is that while the upgrade is fairly easy, it is more resource intensive and has the classic problem of upgrades on older hardware--bloat and the related issues that come with that. I'm lucky that OS4 is perfectly fine for my needs so it can stay as lean and mean as when I got it. :)
