SATA is not an issue, all SATA drives will run on a SATA-1 interface. SATA is backwards compatible.
You will want to do a factory default (rebuilding the NAS from backups) to go with 2 TB drives. You need 4K alignment to get good performance, and that requires a factory default done on 4.1.7 or later.
