The ReadyNAS 600B you have does have a Gigabit NIC. Swapping to another gigabit NIC won't give you better speeds. You should max out around 25-30MB/s if your switch/end-device is also gig-capable. You won't see beyond that due to the NSP-chip the system uses, only so much horsepower.
Adding other PCI NICs to the system is not really supported, but a few will work. I believe some RealTek and Intel cards are your best bet.
