Replacing the CPU fan of a ReadyNAS Pro 6

Hello everyone!

My shiny new ReadyNAS Pro 6 has a minor problem: the CPU fan makes a ticking noise which seems to be getting ever louder. Because RMAing the whole unit from Finland would be a hassle and would cost a lot, I was thinking of replacing the CPU fan myself. Is there something special about the CPU fan? From what I've been able to gather from previous discussions with the older Pro Business model, the fans seems to need to be thin. There also seems to have been some talk about 3-pin versus 4-pin cables. I would love to hear about specific fan models which would be more or less a drop-in replacement.

  • I was able to find a suitable replacement 80x80x15mm fan: Delta EFC0812DB-PWM. Both its CFM rating and static pressure exceed that of the stock fan. Not loud at 1900 RPM (which the Pro 6 seems to keep it at) and keeps the CPU cool.

    Specs:
    Size: 80x80x15mm
    Airflow: 48.8CFM
    Static pressure: 0.171 inchH20
    Noise: 41.0dBA
    Current: 0.33A
    Speed: 3800RPM
  • Aren't you a little concerned that you may have voided your warranty?
What did Netgear want to courier the unit? It's pretty cheap normally in Europe.
