RN 424 - Excessive space consumed by Snapshots

I was running out of space on my ReadyNAS 424, so I backed up the data to another device and deleted a considerable amount of data.  My current stats are Total space ~3TB with Data at 246 GB, Free Space at 200 GB and Snapshots consuming 2.3 TB.  I can't find any way to access snapshots to clear them, or in any way reduce them.

Short of deleting or formatting my largest volume, is there a clear old snapshots?  I have looked under the snapshot restore window, but I don't even see any snapshots in there (nor anything in the snapshot sub-directory in the data directory).

  • On the Shares tab, right-click on the gear icon of a share that has snapshots you want to delete and select Recover.  Then right-click on the snapshot you want to remove and select Delete.  If no snapshots are showing up, then you'll need to go in via SSH and delete them (with more instructions from here).  Note that it make take a little time for the NAS to recover the freed space.

If you have a lot of "file churn" on your NAS, and especially if you also have defrag turned on, then that can lead to excessive space used for snapshots.  The default "smart" snapshots can also be an issue, as they retain monthly snapshots forever.  Going to custom snapshots and specifying a retention time can help a lot.
