Your UBOOT is probably corrupt and a USB recovery should fix it unless the memory itself (not just the content) is bad.

I have tried a USB recovery. I ve created a USB stick, and booted the NAS from the stick. It completes, then powers off - but when I power on the NAS again - same symptoms đ
is there any way I can get to the memory to reseat it, or is it hard wired to a board?

Memory (flash and ram) are soldered to the board.
Have you tried powering down, removing the disks (labeling by slot), and then powering up? See if the NAS reports a "no disks" status.
Normally the NAS will boot from disk 1, and there are situations where an issue with disk 1 will result in a failure to boot.
