I'd run a full erase test on HD3 with lifeguard. If that passes, then hot-insert it into bay 3 again.

ok, I'll that asap. Bear in mind that it was a brand new one, just like the other....

Another approach is to do a factory reset with HD3 in slot 1, and then try adding the other disks one at a time.
